The Rise of Luxury Handbags for Men

For decades, men have carried wallets, briefcases, messenger bags, backpacks, and duffels without question. Yet the word "handbag" still carries a gendered association.

The reality is simple: modern life requires carrying more than ever. And for men, in their pockets no less. Phones have grown larger, wallets have become thicker, and everyday carry items continue to multiply. The result is often discomfort that many people simply accept as normal.

Research and healthcare professionals have long linked overstuffed back pockets to a condition sometimes referred to as "wallet neuropathy" or "fat wallet syndrome." Sitting on a bulky wallet for extended periods can place pressure on the sciatic nerve, contributing to lower back pain, hip misalignment, numbness, and discomfort that radiates through the leg.

Front pockets present their own challenges. Large smartphones, keys, and wallets can restrict movement, create pressure points while sitting, and place strain on clothing. Over time, they can affect posture and comfort throughout the day.

A Design Problem, Not a Fashion Problem

The conversation around men's bags is often framed as a style choice. In reality, it may be a practical response to a modern problem.

Consider what many people carry daily:

  • Phone
  • Wallet
  • Keys
  • Headphones
  • Chargers
  • Sunglasses
  • Notebook
  • Passport
  • Water bottle
  • Tablet or e-reader

Most pockets were never designed to comfortably accommodate this amount of gear. Function has outgrown pockets.

From Pockets to Purpose

Rather than asking whether men should carry handbags, a better question might be why we continue relying on pockets for tasks they were never designed to perform.

The question is no longer whether men should carry bags. It's why we still distinguish between men's bags and women's bags at all.

The rise of crossbody bags, totes, and compact carryalls reflects a simple reality: our lives have changed, and the way we carry our belongings is evolving with them.

A thoughtfully designed bag distributes weight more evenly, reduces pressure on the body, protects personal items, and keeps essentials organized and accessible.

The History Might Surprise You

Historically, bags were not gendered. Men routinely carried purses, pouches, and satchels for centuries before industrialization and modern fashion norms divided accessories by gender.

Luxury Brands Have Already Moved On

Designers such as Pharrell Williams, Jacob Elordi, and A$AP Rocky have helped normalize handbags as everyday accessories for men.

Function Is Universal

A well-designed bag solves the same problem regardless of gender:

  • Organization
  • Accessibility
  • Comfort
  • Security
  • Mobility

Despite the growing visibility of men's bags, the handbag market remains overwhelmingly dominated by women. Women accounted for approximately 89% of global handbag sales in 2025, while the men's segment represented a much smaller share of the market. However, men's bags are also one of the fastest-growing categories, reflecting a gradual shift in how consumers think about carrying and accessories. In other words, handbags may still be associated with women, but the boundaries are becoming less relevant every year.

Great bags don't need a gender. What do you think? Tell us in the comments.

The Future Is Gender Free

Many of the most interesting accessories today sit somewhere between tote, briefcase, crossbody, and handbag. Consumers increasingly shop based on function, aesthetics, and quality rather than which department a product is sold in.

At INTGR, we design for the way people move through the world. As tools designed to support everyday life- reducing friction, creating ease, and allowing people to move comfortably through their day.

A well-designed bag isn't an accessory for carrying more. It's a solution for carrying better.

Whether it's carried to a meeting, on a flight, or through everyday routines, the best bags become part of how we live. They simplify, organize, and support us without demanding attention.

We believe great design is universal. It isn't defined by who carries it, but by how well it serves its purpose.

Good design doesn't need a label. It simply works.

The future of bags isn't about gender. It's about carrying what we need, comfortably and thoughtfully.
